Will there really be all these hazards after an earthquake?
Unfortunately, downed power lines, gas leaks, fires, and smoke are all likely after a major earthquake. And yes, many roads will be blocked by debris, and overpasses will collapse. That’s why it’s best NOT to try to travel if you are in a safe place. Make plans for what to do if you’re away from home when disaster strikes, including plans for pet care.
Should I really shut off gas valves if I smell or hear a gas leak after an earthquake?
Northwest Natural says to do this at home “if you can do so safely” – here’s how. If you want to help deal with environmental hazards in your broader surroundings, free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) or Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET, the name for CERT in Portland, OR) training can teach you to do so safely.
Can you really get past a downed power line with a shuffle step?
You should DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to stay at least 50 feet away from downed power lines! In the game the power lines come down around a house that has caught fire. If a power line comes down close to you in a place you can’t stay because of a deadly environmental hazard, PGE says shuffle out of range of the power line by taking small steps while keeping both feet in contact with the ground at all times. Remember, even lines that aren't sparking might be live.
Will a mask really protect me in smoke?
Most disaster guidance out there relates to wildfire smoke. Oregon Health Authority says to stay out of smoke if at all possible but “NIOSH-approved respirators may offer some protection” if properly fitted (ideally by a professional). Limitations: masks won’t work for people with facial hair, don’t come in children’s sizes, and shouldn’t be used by people with certain pre-existing health conditions.
Will I really be able to get over Tilikum Crossing?
Don’t count on it! While the bridge itself is expected to survive, the approaches may well collapse. The Sellwood Bridge might do better, but a future new Burnside Bridge will be the key to reliably connecting the east and west sides of the Willamette River.
